Update: Because I’ve been reading mixed reports about whether handguns will be allowed in the Tampa Bay Times Forum during the convention, I phoned the person at the Forum who’s specifically in charge of Convention security and he told me that there is no correct answer: the Secret Service has the authority to override both state law and Governor Scott’s wishes, and they haven’t made their decision yet.
Original post, May 10, 2012:
In Florida, with very few exceptions, the right of anybody with a concealed carry license (issued in Florida or elsewhere) to carry it anywhere he likes is absolute. The mayor of Tampa, Florida, where the GOP convention is being held, sought an exemption for the event, but was denied. Governor Rick Scott explicitly announced that the Second Amendment guarantees all participants the right to come to the 4-day event armed.
Seriously, even if you’re the most adamant supporter of gun rights, does this really sound like a good idea?
